CHAPTER SIXTEEN

The clatter of dice on the cheap motel tabletop was punctuated by Rosie's triumphant whoop of glee. "Take that, Tiffany. It's your turn to buy the next round of celebratory cocktails."

I groaned in mock dismay and raked a hand through my unruly brown hair. "Are you ever going to let me buy the mansion of my dreams?"

A mischievous glint danced in Rosie's eyes. "Not a chance, boss."

Rolling my eyes good-naturedly, I leaned back in my chair, stretched my arms overhead, and wondered if we should wrap up this game before I lost too badly. Maybe I could bring up the excuse of wanting to go out for a walk.

Rosie, Stone, and I were enjoying ourselves with a nice game of Monopoly. Nice, that is, until Rosie had begun winning blatantly. She had the luck of board games, she'd told us previously, and I knew she also had the luck of darts, pool, and all manner of party games. Still, I figured I could at least try to buy some houses along the block. At this rate, though, Rosie would be up to hotels soon.

There was a gentle rap at the door. I straightened in my seat and looked at Rosie and Stone. Neither of them seemed to know who it was, so I waved a dismissive hand and put on a polite smile.

"Probably just housekeeping. I'll get rid of them."

I pushed back from the table and crossed the room in a few quick strides. I pulled open the door, ready to dismiss whoever was on the other side. I'd already mentally rehearsed my polite but firm request to be left alone for the time being.

The words died on my lips.

I found myself face to face with Officer Andrew Benson himself.

The young cop looked more flustered than usual. His cheeks were flushed red, and there were beads of sweat dotting his brow, despite the fact that the motel was nicely air-conditioned to the perfect comfortable temperature.

“Good morning, Miss Black,” he said, tipping his hat in an almost comical display of politeness. “I’m so sorry to be bothering y’all so early, but I’ve got some news I figured you’d want to hear about.”

I frowned and indicated for him to follow me inside.

“What’s up, Officer?” Rosie asked. “You’re not here to stop me from taking over the whole board, are you?”

Officer Andrew looked at the board, confused for a moment. “No, no,” he said sincerely. “What you folks do in your spare time is none of my business.”

I stopped myself from laughing. The poor guy was so earnest and dedicated.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“Well, you see, I’ve been on the phone with some of the people over in the city police department,” he said nervously. His eyes were wide with innocence and naivety.

“I told them all about the situation down here. I wanted to see if maybe they’d have any advice on how I ought to proceed from here."

“And?” I prompted him when he paused for a beat too long, "What did your big-city cops have to say?"

Andrew puffed out his cheeks.
